A new Classix concert at the Palace of Culture in Iași: Treeline

The Classix Concerts series continues this spring with “Treeline,” a European project by British composer and pianist Graham Fitkin, taking place on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 20:00, at the Palace of Culture in Iași.

The concert offers a contemporary musical experience centered on the relationship between people and the environment, bringing together communities from ten European countries in an interdisciplinary artistic initiative dedicated to trees, biodiversity, and collective memory. Conceived as a journey traveled by bicycle, spanning over 4,000 km, the project starts in Romania and reaches the United Kingdom, symbolically following the line of European forests—from ancient woodland areas to the fragments that remain in today’s landscape. In each participating country, local communities—from artists and cultural institutions to schools, universities, and environmental organizations—have selected a representative tree and contributed stories, field recordings, and sound materials, later integrated into an extensive composition for piano, keyscanner, and string ensemble.

For Romania, the project draws its inspiration from Eminescu’s Linden Tree in Iași, a symbolic and cultural landmark reinterpreted sonically through the contribution of the Classix community and later adapted into new musical textures by Graham Fitkin.

The concert will bring to the stage Graham Fitkin (UK), on piano and keyscanner, alongside the Classix Quintet (RO), consisting of Luciana Dumitriu (violin I), Maribel Coteanu (violin II), Emma Popa (viola), Dana Cristiana Macovei (cello), and Andrei Anton (double bass).

Graham Fitkin is one of the prominent names in contemporary British music, associated with minimalist and post-minimalist movements. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists and institutions such as Yo-Yo Ma, BBC Orchestras, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, New York City Ballet, Nederlands Blazersensemble, and Sacconi Quartet, and his works have been presented on prestigious international stages and at major festivals.

In his recent projects, Fitkin explores the relationship between music, technology, and performative space, creating sound experiences that go beyond the traditional concert format and emphasize interdisciplinarity and artistic immersion.

The Palace of Culture in Iași thus hosts another event in the Classix series, a platform dedicated to contemporary music projects and artistic experiences that bring together classical music, new technologies, and interdisciplinary dialogue.

Tickets for the concert are available online through the official Classix platforms, and pupils and students benefit from discounted access, subject to availability. Full information about the program and tickets can be found at www.classix.ro.
