Ioan-Dragoș Dimitriu, born in Brașov in 1991, made his international debut in 2011 at the Berlin Philharmonic with Beethoven’s Concerto No. 5 “Emperor”. He has also performed as a soloist or member of chamber music ensembles on numerous stages in Europe and Japan.
Dragoș began studying piano at the age of 6 and was guided in the art of piano by the pianist and Professor Dr. Corina Ibănescu. Together with his mentor, from 2003 to 2010, he won over 20 first prizes and five Grand Prizes at national and international piano competitions, including the first prize at the international music competition in Fundao, Portugal. Between 2003-2007, he won first prize at national olympiads and was a laureate of the Eurovision Young Musicians. He also performed with most Romanian orchestras under conductors such as Ilarion Ionescu-Galați, Horia Andreescu, Tiberiu Soare, and others.
In 2010, he joined the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he was mentored by Martin Hughes and later Stefan Arnold. As a solo pianist or in chamber ensembles, he won first prizes at international competitions such as the “Pietro Argento” International Piano Competition in Italy, Cameristi de’ll Alpe Adria Competition in Italy, and the Casino Austria Rising Stars Award in Vienna (along with Serbian saxophonist Marko Dzomba).
In recent years, Dragoș has aimed to support artists and high-quality art among musicians of his age. He founded the Aegeria Artists Management agency in Vienna and the Transylvanian International Piano Competition in Brașov, which brought over 100 pianists from around the world to Brașov. He is also the founder of the Ton der Jugend Symphonieorchester youth orchestra in Vienna, which has brought some of the most talented artists under 35 to stages like the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna and the Vienna Konzerthaus. In 2018 and 2019, the Ton der Jugend Association co-organized the Croatian Music Festival in Vienna.
Since 2018, he has been the Artist Manager of the Chiemgauer Musikfrühling in Germany and the SoNoRo International Chamber Music Festival. He also collaborated with the SoNoRo Festival for the pre-release of the CD “Rhapsodie Roumaine” in the Glass Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. In 2019, he was a co-organizer of the Stift Zomerfestival in the Netherlands.
In 2019, along with pianist Horia Mihail, he founded the TAMTAM Festival in Brașov. Moreover, starting in March 2020, the two founded ScenaVirtualaTAMTAM, the first of its kind internationally during the pandemic.
In September 2020, Ioan-Dragoș Dimitriu was appointed Manager of the Brașov Philharmonic. In 2022, he launched the pilot project “Apollonia Culture Bank”, which led to the establishment of a new cultural institution in Brașov – the Apollonia Cultural Center.
