Arcadia Quartet

Founded in 2006 at the “Gheorghe Dima” Academy of Music, and later as graduates of postgraduate studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and alumni of the European Chamber Music Academy, the quartet has performed worldwide. Their notable appearances include concerts at the Budapest Spring Festival, George Enescu International Festival, Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), Alte Oper Frankfurt, Pollack Hall (Montreal), Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Izumi Hall (Osaka), Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Konzerthaus, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Tel Aviv, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the UK, and Beijing.

In March 2015, the quartet made their debut on BBC Radio 3 with a live broadcast from Wigmore Hall, and in April 2015, they were invited to become the quartet-in-residence at the “Romanian Youth National Art Center” in Bucharest, a position they still hold today.

Over the years, the quartet has collaborated with numerous internationally acclaimed artists, including Marin Cazacu, Diana Ligeti, Amit Peled, Remus Azoiței, Sarah Chang, Robert Levin, János Bálint, Seiya Ueno, Ad Libitum Quartet, ConTempo Quartet, and the Belcea Quartet, among others.

The Arcadia Quartet’s debut album, released by Fontenay Classics in 2009, features works by Mendelssohn and Brahms and received enthusiastic reviews from music critics. In October 2013, they released an album with Janáček’s Quartets Nos. 1 and 2 under Orchid Classics, praised by *The Sunday Times* for its “heart-piercing beauty” and “overwhelming intensity.”

In September 2017, the Arcadia Quartet began a collaboration with Chandos Records, releasing a complete recording of Béla Bartók’s string quartets. This double CD garnered critical acclaim from leading music publications worldwide, earning five-star ratings in *Diapason* and *Classica*. Their collaboration with Chandos also includes an ambitious project to record all 17 string quartets by Mieczysław Weinberg in a six-album series, to be released over the coming years.

The first volume, released in January 2021, won the *Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik* (German Record Critics’ Award) in Spring 2021 and was a finalist at the 2022 ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) in the Chamber Music category. The second volume, released in May 2022, was lauded by the *Financial Times* for the quartet’s first-rate performance and was a finalist for the Limelight Recording of the Year 2022 in the Chamber Music category. The third volume (Quartets Nos. 4 and 16), released in March 2023, received the *Diapason d’Or* and was also nominated for the Gramophone Awards and ICMA 2024. The penultimate disc in the series was recorded in April 2024, with the final volume expected in 2025.

Driven by their desire to promote classical music at the highest level and share their experiences with future generations of musicians, the quartet established the *Arcadia Chamber Music Classes*. This annual series of masterclasses, dedicated to string chamber ensembles, provides professional guidance and support to young musicians. The inaugural edition was hosted in Summer 2021 by the “Gheorghe Dima” National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca.
