Maria Kjos Fonn (b. 1990) was nominated for Tarjei Vesaas’ debutant award and received the Aschehoug debutant scholarship for the short story collection “Dette har jeg aldri fortalt til noen” (“This, I have never told anyone”) in 2014.
The novel “Kinderwhore” was published in autumn 2018. It received rave reviews, has been translated into several languages and was nominated for the Brage prize and the P2 listeners’ novel prize. In 2020 “Heroin chic” followed, and several reviewers declared it one of the most important novels of the year. It was also nominated for the P2 listeners’ novel prize and the Natt & Dag Oslo prize.
Fonn has received Tanum’s women’s scholarship and Mads Wiel Nygaard’s grant for her writing. She writes regularly for Morgenbladet and Aftenposten and has also written for Klassekampen and a number of magazines. Her short story “Love, Leen” has been translated into German in the anthology “Neue Nordische Novellen”.
Fonn debuted as a children’s book author in autumn 2022 with the book “Memoria”. Here she tells stories from the underworld Memoria.
In the autumn of 2024, the novel “Margaret, er du i sorg (“Margaret, are you grieving”) was published and was praised by critics for its dark humor and its bold and lyrical realism. For this she was awareded the Riksmål Society Literature Prize.
