Octavian Lup

Octavian Lup, one of the most brilliant cellists of his generation, is an ambassador of excellence in classical music, standing out on both national and international stages. A laureate of numerous prestigious competitions, Octavian has performed on four continents, collaborating with renowned artists such as Pinchas Zukerman, Cristian Măcelaru, David Garrett, and the Belcea Quartet.  

He pursued advanced studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, under the mentorship of Roland Pidoux and Xavier Phillips, and at the Kronberg Academy in Germany, guided by masters Frans Helmerson and Gary Hoffman. Additionally, he completed his doctorate at the National University of Music in Bucharest, studying under the esteemed Marin Cazacu.  

As a soloist, Octavian has collaborated with all major Romanian philharmonics, including the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest, and has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, such as the Musikverein in Vienna, Konzerthaus Berlin, Berliner Philharmonie, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Luxembourg Philharmonic.  

Dedicated to education, he is a university lecturer and doctoral advisor at the Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca, where he conducts masterclasses and mentors a new generation of musicians who already represent Romania with distinction internationally. In 2018, he founded the **New Hope** project, bringing music to hospitals and unconventional spaces, and in 2019, he established the New Hope Orchestra, where he serves as conductor.  

Throughout his career, he has received numerous national and international awards, including the Grand Prize at the “George Georgescu,” “Paul Constantinescu,” and “Mihail Jora” competitions, as well as Second Prize at the International David Popper Competition in Hungary. In 2004, he represented Romania in the final of the Eurovision Young Musicians competition in Lucerne, Switzerland.  

Today, Octavian Lup continues to inspire through his artistic and educational activities and his passion for promoting cultural values.
