Andrei Cozlac

Andrei Cozlac (b. 18 March 1986, Botoșani) is a video artist, VJ and new media creator recognised for the way he merges technology with artistic expression in theatre, installation and video mapping. He is Associate Professor (PhD) at “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași, Faculty of Visual Arts, within the Photography, Video and Computerised Image Processing Department, and collaborating professor within the Media Department of the Faculty of Arts (Romanian section) in Târgu Mureș, where he contributes to shaping new generations of artists and to developing a pedagogy aligned with contemporary artistic practices.
His educational journey began at “Ștefan Luchian” Art High School in Botoșani, followed by undergraduate and Master’s studies in Photo-Video at “George Enescu” University of Arts in Iași. Between 2007 and 2008, he was an Erasmus student in the United Kingdom at Dartington College of Arts and Falmouth University, an experience that strengthened his interest in contemporary art and the use of digital media within performative contexts. In 2013, he obtained his PhD in Visual Arts. His research focused on the relationship between perception and virtuality, as well as on new media practices in the context of performing arts, a direction materialised in the volume Practici New Media în contextul artelor performative (New Media Practices in the Context of Performing Arts), published in 2017 and awarded a Diploma of Excellence.
An experimental artist engaged with emerging multimedia technologies, Andrei Cozlac has developed an extensive portfolio of visuals, live projections and video mapping projects. He began his activity as a VJ in 2005, performing within the crews Drums.ro and DGW, and later collaborating with major music festivals in Romania and abroad. He founded the project AV//Sattelites, with which he shared the stage alongside artists such as Arms and Sleepers, Sungliters, Sun Gliters, Brazda lui Novac and Yvat, exploring a territory where audio-visual performance becomes an autonomous language.
In theatre, his visual signature is associated with productions directed by Silviu Purcărete, Radu Afrim, Alexandru Dabija, Charles Muller, Theodor Cristian Popescu, Eugen Jebeleanu, Ioana Păun, Octavian Jighirgiu and Florin Caracala. Among his most significant collaborations is the production Plugarul și moartea (The Ploughman and Death), directed by Silviu Purcărete with set design by Dragoș Buhagiar, a performance that brought him both national and international recognition.
His work has been acknowledged through numerous distinctions. In 2016, he won third prize at the international video mapping competition Light Up Iași, returning in 2017 to win first prize. That same year, he received the award for video mapping in theatre at the National Comedy Festival. In 2020, he was honoured with the Special U.N.I.T.E.R. Award for video mapping in theatre at the UNITER Gala. In 2022, he received a second Special U.N.I.T.E.R. Award for the creativity of his video design in Plugarul și moartea. The same production also earned him the award for Best Video Design at the International Theatre Festival “Theatre at the Crossroads” in Niš, Serbia. In 2022, he received the distinction “Meritul Cultural” (Cultural Merit) within the event “Valorile Iașului, Valorile României”, and in 2025 he was nominated for the UNITER Awards for Best Video Design (for the year 2024).
His exhibition and interdisciplinary activity includes projects and installations presented in contexts such as Romanian Creative Week, Bienala Albastră “Essentia”, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, ARCUB, the National Theatre Festival, and within the Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin, Paris and Budapest. In 2021 and 2022, he exhibited alongside Felix Aftene and Lucian Dan Teodorovici in Berlin and Paris. His curatorial practice materialised through the development of platforms such as New Media District, New Media Alley and New Media District Capsule, as well as through the exhibition series Video (including Video 5. Fields of Confusion, 2025).
