Ensemble Bayona
(Spain)
Concert:
The Ensemble Bayona is named in homage to the Zaragozan pianist Pilar Bayona (1897-1979), the first Aragonese woman pianist to dedicate her professional life to concerts. Her figure inspires the ensemble’s philosophy: a deep respect for tradition combined with an openness to the contemporary world she lived in. Pilar Bayona was also distinguished by her closeness to other artistic disciplines, which greatly enriched her interpretative visión.
The core of Ensemble Bayona’s repertoire is chamber music from the first half of the 20th century. The ensemble is convinced that this period harbors a brilliant repertoire that remains little explored on the big stages. However, it considers it key to integrate works from the more traditional and well-known repertoire in order to contextualize, both dramaturgically and rhetorically, new concert formats.
Of changeable formation, the ensemble is articulated around the creative impulse of cellist Eros Jaca, its artistic director. The Ensemble Bayona received the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Prize 2020, which allowed it to make its debut at the Konzerthaus Berlin in 2021. This concert was recorded and broadcast by Deutschlandfunk Radio.
A regular guest at the Auditorio de Zaragoza, Ensemble Bayona began its career in 2017 in this same space with its debut concert, Al Margen, for which it was awarded the following year with the CREAR 2018 Award from the Instituto Aragonés de la Juventud, in recognition of the outstanding artistic innovation.
Recently, Ensemble Bayona has released Cuando el Fuego Abrasa, its first CD recording on the Eudora Records label, in co-production with the Swiss National Radio (SRF). The album includes the rescue of the Quintet on Swiss themes by Swiss composer Joseph Lauber. It also features the collaboration of prominent composers such as Francisco Coll and José Luis Turina. The project has been broadcast by Catalunya Ràdio, Radio Luxembourg and Radio Nacional de España.
With an international projection, the ensemble has been consolidating its presence in Switzerland, where it made its debut at the Stadttheater Olten, Aargauer Kunsthaus and the Hirzenberg Festival, as well as giving concerts in Spain at the Teatro Filarmónica and the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo and the Teatros del Canal in Madrid, among others. Its next performances include the Festival Quincena Musical de San Sebastián and the festival Les Jardins Musicaux in Switzerland.
