Ensemble Bayona
(Spain)
Concert:
Ensemble Bayona is a chamber music ensemble named in homage to the Zaragozan pianist Pilar Bayona (1897–1979), the first Aragonese woman pianist to dedicate her professional life to concert performance. Her legacy inspires the ensemble’s philosophy, rooted in a deep respect for tradition and an openness to the contemporary world in which she lived. Pilar Bayona was also distinguished by her close relationship with other artistic disciplines, which greatly enriched her interpretative vision.
The core of Ensemble Bayona’s repertoire is chamber music from the first half of the 20th century. The ensemble believes that this period contains a remarkable body of work that remains largely unexplored on major stages. At the same time, it considers the integration of more traditional and well-known repertoire essential in order to contextualize new concert formats, both dramaturgically and rhetorically.
With a flexible formation, the ensemble is shaped around the creative vision of cellist Eros Jaca, its artistic director. In 2020, Ensemble Bayona received the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Prize, which led to its debut at Konzerthaus Berlin in 2021. This concert was recorded and broadcast by Deutschlandfunk Radio.
A regular guest at Auditorio de Zaragoza, Ensemble Bayona began its activity in 2017 in the same venue with its debut concert, Al Margen. The following year, the ensemble was awarded the CREAR 2018 Award by Instituto Aragonés de la Juventud, in recognition of its outstanding artistic innovation.
Recently, Ensemble Bayona released Cuando el Fuego Abrasa, its first recording, published by Eudora Records in co-production with Swiss National Radio (SRF). The album features the rediscovery of Quintet on Swiss themes by Swiss composer Joseph Lauber, alongside collaborations with prominent contemporary composers such as Francisco Coll and José Luis Turina. The project has been broadcast by Catalunya Ràdio, Radio Luxembourg and Radio Nacional de España.
With a growing international presence, the ensemble has been consolidating its activity in Switzerland, where it has appeared at Stadttheater Olten, Aargauer Kunsthaus and Hirzenberg Festival. It has also performed extensively in Spain, including concerts at Teatro Filarmónica and Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo, as well as at Teatros del Canal in Madrid, among others. Upcoming appearances include Festival Quincena Musical de San Sebastián and Les Jardins Musicaux in Switzerland.
