Concert:
With contagious energy, unstoppable enthusiasm and a remarkable musical presence, Frank Dupree Trio crosses the boundaries between classical music and jazz. A unique ensemble on the European musical scene, the trio is led by the award-winning pianist and conductor Frank Dupree, who is joined by two outstanding soloists: drummer Obi Jenne and double bassist Jakob Krupp.
Combining the rigorous approach of classical masterpieces with the freedom and spontaneity of jazz improvisation, Frank Dupree Trio explores with ease the spaces between musical genres. Its repertoire includes original compositions and original arrangements, spanning a wide musical landscape, from Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel and Nikolai Kapustin to works by Kurt Weill, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein, as well as jazz standards by iconic figures such as Duke Ellington and Chick Corea.
International tours have taken Frank Dupree Trio across numerous European countries and to South Korea, complemented by appearances at prestigious venues and festivals including Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Jazzfest Bonn, Heidelberger Frühling, Kurt Weill Fest Dessau and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The trio’s work has also been featured in broadcasts by ZDF Morgenmagazin, SWR2, BR Klassik and Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
Concert projects and CD recordings have led to collaborations with renowned orchestras such as SWR Symphonieorchester, SWR Big Band, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal and Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn.
Highlights of the current season include performances of George Gershwin’s Concerto in F major, presented in a jazz trio version with orchestras such as the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra and the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra, as well as concerts at BIX Stuttgart, Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele and Bachwochen Ansbach.
The trio’s international breakthrough came in 2022 with the release of its debut album Blueprint, published by Capriccio, featuring jazz trio arrangements of works by the Ukrainian-born composer Nikolai Kapustin. The New York Times included the album among the most notable releases of the year. It was also recommended by arte journal and 3sat Kulturzeit, while rbb Kultur named Blueprint “Album of the Week”. Süddeutsche Zeitung praised the performances as “captivating sketches” and highlighted the trio’s artistic excellence.
Also released in 2022, the album Salted Caramel, on the Berlin Classics label, features Frank Dupree Trio alongside trumpeter Simon Höfele, combining works from the trumpet repertoire with jazz standards. The magazine Fono Forum noted the natural ease with which Frank Dupree moves between jazz and classical music, underlining the artistic consistency of the project.
The trio is also featured in the documentary Jacques Loussier. Wenn Klassik auf Jazz trifft, produced by arte in 2023, which explores the dialogue between classical music and jazz in a contemporary context.
