Joke Wijma is a distinguished Dutch horn player, recognised for her versatility and expressive artistry. Since 2005, she has been a core member of Esbjerg Ensemble, Denmark’s leading chamber group, celebrated for its dynamic interpretations of both classical and contemporary repertoire.

She began her studies at the Conservatory in Groningen, where she worked with Frank Brouns and Hans Dullarert, and later continued at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, studying with the renowned Dutch hornist Ab Koster. After graduating in 2004, she pursued further studies with Ab Koster while undertaking an internship with the Duisburger Philharmoniker, gaining valuable orchestral experience.

Throughout her career, she has performed extensively across Europe, North America and Asia, presenting a repertoire that ranges from traditional classical works to avant-garde contemporary pieces, reflecting her ongoing commitment to musical exploration and innovation.

A particularly memorable moment in her career was performing “Sea Eagle” by Peter Maxwell Davies for solo horn outdoors, alongside a live bird of prey show. This unique experience exemplifies her adventurous spirit and dedication to creating immersive musical performances.

In addition to her performing career, Joke Wijma is actively involved in music education, leading masterclasses and workshops that inspire the next generation of musicians. Her contribution to Esbjerg Ensemble and to the broader musical community continues to enrich today’s cultural landscape.
