mariola Membrives
Cantaora | From Spain
Concert:
Mariola Membrives (Spain) is one of the most distinctive and boundary-pushing voices in contemporary Spanish music. Critics place her among a new generation of artists reshaping the country’s sonic landscape through a bold fusion of flamenco, jazz and experimental creation.
She has released four albums, from her 2013 debut Llorona with Masa Kamaguchi to her acclaimed duo with Marc Ribot, Lorca. Spanish Songs (2019), widely regarded as one of the essential records of its year. Her recent works, La Babilonia(2022) and the four-part project Ajuares (2023–2024), further consolidate her strong artistic identity and her fluid movement between tradition and the avant-garde.
She has performed at major jazz festivals and in renowned venues such as Teatre Grec, L’Auditori, hr-Sendesaal, Konzerthaus Berlin, Alte Oper Frankfurt and Theatro Municipal do Rio. As a soloist, she has collaborated with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro and the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC), among others.
She is currently the flamenco soloist of the Giosimphonie Orchestra and also collaborates with Ensemble Bayona, expanding her symphonic and contemporary repertoire. As an actress and stage performer, she has worked with La Fura dels Baus and Pep Tosar on projects that intertwine theatre, voice and experimentation.
A graduate in Flamenco Singing and Dramatic Arts, with further training in jazz and contemporary music at ESMUC and Taller de Músics, she has also taught at leading conservatories in Spain. She has received awards from the Junta de Andalucía, Time Out (Best National Creator, 2019) and the Altaveu Awards (2022).
