Michel Camille
Viola | United Kingdom
Michel Camille has been a member of Esbjerg Ensemble since 1995 and served as Artistic Director of the ensemble from 1997 to 2001.
Since 1999, he has been the Artistic and Administrative Director of Esbjerg International Chamber Music Festival, bringing chamber musicians from around the world to the city and presenting ever-evolving perspectives on both contemporary and classical chamber music.
During his studies, he won numerous awards, the first at the age of 11, when he received a scholarship to Wells Cathedral School, one of England’s leading music institutions. There, intensive training was combined with frequent performances as soloist and ensemble musician, including appearances with Yehudi Menuhin, Yfrah Neaman, Norman Del Mar and Igor Ozim across Europe and beyond.
After turning 18, he received further distinctions for solo and chamber music performances in London, including the Premier Prix at Guildhall School of Music, where he studied with Professor David Takeno, and later the Concerto Prize at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
Following several years of orchestral work, often as principal viola, with Academy of St Martin in the Fields, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Musici, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and City of London Sinfonia, he devoted himself primarily to chamber music.
Since then, he has been active in both the classical and contemporary chamber music scenes, not only as a performer but also as an artistic director, collaborating with Athelas Ensemble, Pellegrini Quartet, Christian Altenburger, Steven Dann, Marko Ylönen, Monica Groop, Morten Frank Larsen, Tuva Semmingsen, Ernst Kovacic, Swiss Piano Trio, Juhani Lagerspetz and David Grimal.
