Ron Chen-Zion

Clarinet | From Israel

Ron Chen-Zion has been a member of Esbjerg Ensemble since 1993. As Denmark’s oldest professional international chamber music ensemble, Esbjerg Ensemble is renowned for its dynamic performances and its strong commitment to both contemporary and classical repertoire, playing a significant role in the Danish and international music scene.

His musical journey began in an unexpected way. At the age of 11, he found an advertisement that promised, “Learn to play an instrument in only three months.” When he arrived at the music school, the only instrument available was the clarinet. He shared the instrument with another student, each having it for three days a week.

He began his formal studies with Richard Lesser of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1986, he moved to the United States to continue his studies at the New England Conservatory, from which he graduated.

In 1990, Ron Chen-Zion was appointed principal clarinetist of The State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, he has been frequently invited to Rudolf Serkin’s Marlboro Music Festival in the United States and has performed throughout Europe, Israel and the Americas.

His discography includes several CD recordings, among them a highly praised interpretation of works for clarinet and piano by Max Reger.
