Tim Crawford

Tim Crawford is an accomplished British violinist, recognised for his work as both a soloist and chamber musician. He is currently studying at the Basel Musik Akademie under Rainer Schmidt, while maintaining an active performance career across the UK and Europe.

Born to two violinist parents, his connection to music began early. He entered the Royal Academy of Music at the age of four, where he won numerous awards and distinctions, establishing himself as a prodigious talent.

He continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music in London under Alexander Janiczek, completing his undergraduate degree and receiving the Concert Recital Diploma, the Ivan Sutton Chamber Prize and the Lord Mayor’s Prize for the highest mark across the music department. He later returned to the institution as a Chamber Fellow.

A dedicated chamber musician, he is a founding member of the Teyber Trio with Timothy Ridout and Tim Posner. From 2017 to 2020 he performed with the Barbican Quartet, winning First Prize and the Classical Era Prize at the Joseph Joachim International Chamber Music Competition. He recently co-founded the Valo Quartet with Maria Włoszczowska, Lilli Maijala and Amy Norrington.

His collaboration with Esbjerg Ensemble forms another important part of his artistic profile. He has been a frequent participant at the IMS Prussia Cove Masterclasses, studying with András Keller and Steven Isserlis, and in 2019 joined the IMS Open Chamber Music Tour, performing at venues including Wigmore Hall in London.

He leads Collegium, founded by Lawrence Power, and performs regularly with Arcangelo under the direction of Jonathan Cohen, working in both historical and modern performance contexts.

He is regularly invited to leading European chamber music festivals, collaborating with artists such as Steven Isserlis, Lawrence Power, Alexi Kenney, Philippe Graffin, Amy Norrington, Alasdair Beatson, Bengt Forsberg, Timothy Ridoutand Paolo Giacometti. He appears at festivals including Musikdorf Ernen, IMS Prussia Cove, Lewes Chamber Festivaland Wye Valley Chamber Festival, and will debut this year at West Wycombe Chamber Festival and Festival Resonances.

His discography includes recordings with the Celan Quartet, of which he was a member from 2011 to 2014. Formed with the support of MusicWorks Chamber Courses and violist James Boyd, the quartet released a critically acclaimed recording of Alban Berg’s Quartet Op.3.

He plays a 1770 Ferdinand Gagliano violin, an instrument that complements his rich and expressive sound. Through his performances, recordings and educational work, Tim Crawford continues to establish himself as one of the leading violinists of his generation.
