The tragic fate of two prominent figures in Austrian and European musical and performing arts – Alma (1906-1944) and her father, Arnold Rosé (1863-1946) – is explored in the event exhibition “Only the Violins Remained – Alma and Arnold Rosé.”
The two prodigious instrumentalists had a relatively little-known relationship with Romania – Arnold Rosé was born in Iași in 1863, before his family moved to Vienna; also, in the 1920s, the Rosé Quartet often performed with George Enescu. The careers of the two Rosé violinists, like those of many other musicians, ended abruptly in 1938, when Austria was annexed by the Nazi Reich. Over 66,000 Austrian Jews fell victim to the Holocaust.
Alma Rosé created and conducted the women’s orchestra at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. She thus managed to save the lives of numerous Jewish musicians before she herself died in that camp in 1944.
Offered by the Haus der Geschichte Österreich (Museum of Recent Austrian History) and the Austrian Cultural Forum, the exhibition “Only the Violins Remained – Alma and Arnold Rosé” is presented through a scenographic concept supervised by visual artist Constantin Butoi, made with the support of the “Luceafărul” Theatre in Iași, for the Classix 2025 Festival.
By participating at the event, participants agree to the use of photographic images and audio and video recordings for the purpose of promoting the festival’s activities.
