Exhibition: APPARATUM

APPARATUM is an installation inspired by the legacy of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio (SEPR), created by the panGenerator group (http://pangenerator.com/) on commission from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the “Polska 100” program.

The installation allows each participant to step into the role of both composer and sound designer of electroacoustic music. A digital touch interface enables users to arrange a composition, while purely analog sound generators—based on sampling magnetic tapes and spinning optical disks—produce the sound. The composition created by the user is uploaded to a server as an MP3 file, and a graphic score is printed in a format reminiscent of a receipt. Through the skillful combination of new and old media, APPARATUM offers an engaging way to experience the distinctive, experimental atmosphere of the Studio, reaching audiences even if they are not previously familiar with its background—thus helping to popularize knowledge and interest in SEPR.

The spatial design of the installation alludes to the “Black Room” project—the former home of the Studio designed by Oskar Hansen. The distinctive aesthetic of the equipment used for creating electroacoustic music, along with the overall minimalism and simplicity of the forms employed by the architect, served as key sources of inspiration.

The foundation for the installation’s graphic and sonic design was provided by Bogusław Schaeffer’s work, “Symphony – Electronic Music.” For this piece, the composer developed a graphic score in which he substituted traditional musical notation with his own set of symbols. These symbols and their arrangement within the score served as cues for the sound designer working in the Studio, who interpreted them through tape editing and analog sound synthesis.
