Knut Skansen

(Norway)

Knut Skansen, the Managing Director of the Oslo Philharmonic since January 2024, brings a wealth of experience in cultural leadership to Norway’s largest symphony orchestra. With a background in French literature and medieval studies from the University of Oslo, Skansen transitioned from hotel management to cultural infrastructure, most notably leading Oslo’s Deichman Library for 14 years. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of the award-winning Bjørvika branch and significantly increased visitor numbers.

In his current role at the Oslo Philharmonic, Skansen is focused on broadening audience engagement and advancing plans for a new “music house” in Oslo. His career is marked by strategic vision, organizational leadership, and a commitment to modernizing cultural spaces. Despite lacking formal music training, Skansen has been a dedicated concert-goer since age 19, with a passion for composers like Handel, Wagner, and Messiaen.

His cross-sector expertise uniquely positions him to bridge traditional arts institutions with contemporary societal needs, emphasizing accessibility and innovation in cultural infrastructure.
