Matei Bejenaru

Matei Bejenaru is an artist and served as the artistic director of the Periferic Biennial in Iași, Romania (1997–2008). In 2015, together with a group of artists and professors, he founded the Contemporary Photography Centre in Iași. In his recent artistic projects, he investigates the materiality of the photographic medium and the politics of representation within documentary practice. Working with analogue technological platforms, he focuses on the photographic process as a witness to the crisis of singularity and to artistic engagement.
Matei Bejenaru’s works have been exhibited at Tate Modern, London — Level 2 Gallery (2007), the Taipei Biennial(2008), Summer of Photography, Brussels (2014), Galerie Art et Essai, Rennes, France (2019), Anca Poterașu Gallery, Bucharest (2022), and Kunsthalle Bega, Timișoara (2024).
Between 2011 and 2012, he was a visiting professor at Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada. Matei Bejenarucurrently teaches photography and video art at the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași. He collaborates with Anca Poterașu Gallery, Bucharest.
