Matei Bejenaru

Matei Bejenaru is an artist and was the artistic director of the Periferic Biennial in Iași, Romania (1997–2008). In 2015, together with a group of artists and professors, he founded the Contemporary Photography Centre in Iași. In his recent artistic projects, he explores the materiality of the photographic medium and the politics of representation in documentary format. Using the analogue technological platform, he focuses on the photographic process as a witness to the crisis of singularity and artistic commitment. Matei Bejenaru’s works have been exhibited at Tate Modern in London — Level 2 Gallery (2007), the Taipei Biennial (2008), Summer of Photography Brussels (2014), Galerie Art et essai in Rennes, France (2019), Anca Poterașu Gallery in Bucharest (2022) and Kunsthalle Bega Timișoara (2024).
Between 2011 and 2012, he was a visiting professor at Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada. Matei Bejenarucurrently teaches photography and video art at the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași. Matei Bejenarucollaborates with Anca Poterașu Gallery in Bucharest.
